Chicago, London, Toronto, Geneva, Sydney, Tokyo, Manila: Encyclopaedia Brittanica, Inc. 1990, Complete 54 Volume Set, 1st Edition, 32nd Printing of the 'Great Books of the Western World.' Thought to be one of the last printings of the 1st edition, prior to the printing of the 2nd edition in the same year (1990). Overseen by the editorial team of Robert M. Hutchins and Mortimer J. Adler, this set sought to bridge the gaps in the liberal arts education of the time, while introducing readers to the great intellectual thinkers and ideas of the prior three millennia. With subject matter divided across 4 general categories (indicated in this printing by color-coded boards and spine labels), the collection seeks to cover 'Imaginative Literature,' 'Mathematics and the Natural Sciences,' 'History and Social Science,' and 'Philosophy and Theology.' Each volume is bound in original boards, color-coded to their respective categories within the set. Title, volume number and an abbreviated set title of 'Brittanica Great Books' are gilt stamped across the spine, alongside decorative gilt stamped bands across the spine and a gilt top edge to the textblock. Spines and approx. 1/3rd of the front and rear boards are bound in a black finish. All books are in very good +/near fine condition, with tight, intact bindings and complete and readable textblocks. Volumes 51, 50, 26, 22, 15, 10, 9, 8, 5, 4, 2 & 1 have been custom shrink wrapped in order to match what is thought to be the original shrink wrapping on the other volumes of the set.
